This Privacy Policy describes how Pure Golf Journal ("Pure," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our mobile application (the "App"). By using Pure, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
We collect only the information needed to make Pure work. We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers or analytics partners beyond what's described below.
1.1 Information you provide directly
Account information — your email address, name, and chosen username when you create an account
Profile information — optional profile photo, home golf course
Golf data you log — course ratings, scores, played dates, written reviews and notes, photos you attach to courses or rounds, tees played, course bucket list selections
Imported scores — if you upload a CSV of past rounds (e.g., from a handicap service), we store those scores
1.2 Information collected automatically
Device information — basic device type and operating system version (collected by Apple, not by us, when you install via the App Store)
App functionality data — minimal logs of errors and unsaved-changes events, used to diagnose bugs. No personal content is included in these logs.
1.3 Information from third-party sign-in providers
If you sign in using Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive:
A unique user identifier from the provider
Your email address (or an Apple-provided private relay address if you chose "Hide My Email")
Your name, if the provider shares it (first sign-in only)
We do not receive your password.
1.4 What we do NOT collect
We do not collect, and have no access to:
Your contacts
Your location (we never request location permission)
Your device camera roll beyond photos you explicitly upload to Pure
Health, fitness, or activity data
Browsing or app-usage data outside Pure
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information solely to operate Pure. Specifically:
To create and maintain your account
To save your ratings, scores, and other data so you can access them across devices
To calculate your handicap based on the rounds you log
To show you relevant features (e.g., course suggestions near your home course)
To respond when you submit a course request or contact support
To diagnose bugs and improve reliability
We do not use your information for:
Advertising
Selling to third parties
Profiling for purposes outside Pure
Training machine learning models
3. Where Your Information Is Stored
Pure uses Supabase (https://supabase.com) as its backend infrastructure provider. Your account and journal data are stored in Supabase's hosted Postgres database, with row-level security ensuring you can only access your own data. Supabase complies with industry-standard security practices including encryption at rest and in transit.
Authentication is handled by Supabase Auth, which integrates with Apple's and Google's OAuth services. When you use those sign-in methods, you are subject to Apple's and Google's respective privacy policies in addition to ours.
4. Sharing Your Information
We share information only as follows:
With your friends in Pure (when you choose to share) — your ratings, scores, photos, and reviews are visible to other Pure users you have explicitly added as friends. You can change privacy settings (e.g., hide scores, hide shots) at any time in Settings.
With service providers — Supabase (for hosting your data), Apple and Google (for sign-in only). These providers process data on our behalf and cannot use it for their own purposes.
For legal reasons — if compelled by valid legal process (subpoena, court order). We will resist overbroad requests.
In an acquisition — if Pure is acquired or merged, your information may transfer to the successor entity, who will be bound by this policy.
We do not sell your information.
4a. Photo License
When you upload photos to Pure (course photos, round photos, or as part of a rating), you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to display those photos within the App, including:
To other Pure users who follow you (subject to your privacy settings)
As your personal hero/preview photo for that course
In future community-photo features that allow other users to optionally feature your photo as a course preview on their own device, with attribution to you
This license is solely for the purpose of operating the App's features. You retain ownership of your photos. You can remove a photo at any time by deleting the rating or round it was attached to, or by reporting it for removal. Removing a photo revokes this license going forward, but does not retroactively recall copies that other users may have already cached on-device.
You agree not to upload photos you do not have the right to share (e.g., copyrighted images you don't own, photos of identifiable individuals without their consent, or content prohibited by Apple's App Store guidelines).
5. Your Rights and Controls
You have the following rights regarding your data:
Access — view all your data inside the App at any time
Delete a single rating or round — tap and hold any rating or score to remove it
Reset your account — Settings → Account → Reset All My Data deletes all your ratings, rounds, statuses, and saved tees while keeping your account
Delete your account entirely — email us at support@puregolfjournal.com and we will delete your account and all associated data within 30 days
Opt out of friend visibility — toggle Privacy → Private Profile in Settings to hide your activity from friends
If you are in the EU, UK, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR and CCPA, including the right to data portability, the right to object to processing, and the right to lodge a complaint with a regulator. We honor these rights for all users regardless of jurisdiction.
6. Children's Privacy
Pure is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it.
7. Data Retention
We retain your account and journal data as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law (e.g., financial records — though Pure currently has no paid features).
Backups are retained for up to 30 days after deletion as part of standard disaster recovery practice. After that they expire automatically.
8. Security
We use the following security measures:
TLS encryption for all data in transit
Encryption at rest (provided by Supabase)
Row-level security policies that prevent users from accessing each other's data even if our application code has a bug
Authentication via industry-standard OAuth (Apple, Google) or password hashing (Supabase Auth)
No system is perfectly secure. If we discover a breach affecting your data, we will notify you within 72 hours of discovery and follow applicable breach-notification laws.
9. International Users
Pure is operated from the United States. If you use Pure from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and stored in the United States. By using Pure, you consent to this transfer.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as Pure evolves. When we do:
We will post the updated policy here with a new "Last updated" date
For material changes, we will notify users in-app or by email at least 14 days before the change takes effect
Your continued use of Pure after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
11. Course Imagery & Intellectual Property
Pure displays photos and information for golf courses sourced from freely-licensed media (such as Wikimedia Commons), course operator websites used in a small editorial capacity, user-submitted photos, and stock photo libraries. Rights holders who believe content in Pure should be removed or corrected may submit a takedown request. See our separate Copyright Notice & Takedown Policy for details.
